Ebenezer – The Stone of Help

“Thus far the Lord has helped us.” – 1 Samuel 7:12

Introduction

Ebenezer (אֶבֶן הָעֵזֶר) means “Stone of Help” in Hebrew. In 1 Samuel 7:12, the prophet Samuel raises a stone as a memorial of divine faithfulness, declaring:

“Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

💬 Reflection: In what—or in whom—are you placing your hope for help?

🪨 Eben — God is Our Solid Rock

📖 Deuteronomy 32:4: “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just.”

📖 Psalm 18:2: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.”

💬 Charles Spurgeon:

“When all else fails, the Rock of Ages stands. In Him the believer can rest without fear.”

Application: Trust not in your circumstances, but in the unchanging Rock who is God.

🙌 Ezer — God is Our Constant Help

📖 Psalm 121:1-2: “I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

📖 Hebrews 13:6: “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.”

💬 Matthew Henry

God is both the source and the channel of our help; and all our help comes from Him and through Him.”

Application: God is not distant. He is your personal and present help, always near.

🕊 Ebenezer — A Memorial of Grace and Victory

📖 1 Corinthians 15:10: “By the grace of God I am what I am.”

📖 Psalm 115:1: “Not to us, O Lord, but to your name be the glory.”

💬 John Calvin:

“Our frailty forces us to depend on God’s help. There is no victory for the believer that is not the fruit of grace.”

Application: Every victory you experience is a gift of grace—acknowledge God’s hand in it.

✝️ Christ: Our True Ebenezer

📖 1 Peter 2:6-7: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”

Jesus is the ultimate Ebenezer—our eternal Rock and Redeemer. He is the Living Stone upon whom our lives are built.
